Ident Analyses
Different channels have a different approach to their idents, what colours are used, font size but one thing that is the same is what affect they have on the people watching. BBC, Channel 4 and Sky Sports show the three idents I have chosen to analyze. Each one has their own difference but all have the same aim. Sky Sports – the ident I have chosen to analyze is one of Sky Sports ‘Christmas Idents’, one in which a block of flats is shown. First of all you see only two flats with lights on but then every flat lights up producing a sense of unity and harmony, representing UK as one whole community. The purpose of the ident is the same as every other ident; to attract viewers into watching their channel. The colours used fit into the season, which we were in at the point of producing the ident. They are bright colours, red, green, connoting Christmas and linking with the colors of Christmas trees and Santa clause. The objects involved in the ident are ones that are involved with sport, example, there is a snowman kicking a football in the front of the house, little things like this all improve the ident and make it more interesting for the viewer which will give Sky Sports more chance of that viewer continuing to watch the channel. Channel 4 Scrapyard – this is the most thoughtful and interesting ident out of the three that I have chosen to analyze. It consists of scrap cars, spare parts that came out of the cars and just general objects that you would in a scrapyard. These materials make up the ‘Channel 4’ logo in which there is a crane helping them do this. I think it is the most interesting one as you would always speak about it after it is shown and I believe would convince you to watch that channel. The first thing you see in the ident is a grey colour symbolizing the cars and the surroundings; this is effective because you would usually associate ‘scrapyards’ with being dull, dark and non-bright colours. Channel 4 has represented that in a very positive and effective way because they have used dark colours but not so dark that you think it was dark at night. Another very important factor I noticed in the ‘Scrapyard’ ident is that the ident doesn’t actually show the channel 4 logo which is a ‘4’, this is very because it shows that channel 4 do not even need to advertise their logo in their idents because they have become such a huge company that viewers only have to look at the ident and can identify what programme that particular ident is associated with. There are several different camera angles used in this ident starting with a ‘worm-eye view’, which is a camera angle that is set on the floor raising. Then through the whole ident the camera starts to rise then stops and levels out which is when the ident is ending. Also when the ident has started the camera shot is one big swing from left to right moving very fast through the scrapyard showing different areas of the scrapyard (tyres, brake pads, etc.) I also feel that the ident relates to the ‘deep south’ in America, with the cranes working non-stop, hundreds of tyres everywhere and the dust in the air. BBC ident used is the one just before ‘Match of the Day’ is on every Saturday night at 10.30pm. It consists of a group of people round the center circle on a football pitch where they each kick a ball into the circle and receive the ball that there partner kicked. Notice that all of BBCs idents have some sort of circle theme to it which stands for the ‘clock’ representing 24 hours, as some people may not of noticed BBC broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I also noticed the colour of the ball used, red, linking back to the main colour used by the BBC. The camera shot is the ‘bird’s eye’ view, so the camera hovers above the centre circle. |
